Something not working, or have an idea? Email whittware101@gmail.com. It helps to say which iPad you have, which iPadOS version it runs and which audio interface you use.

What do I need to play?

An iPad, a way to get your guitar into it (a USB audio interface or a guitar adapter), and headphones or speakers. Plug the headphones into the interface.

The app opened with nothing loaded. Where are the amps?

Shamalamanam plays Neural Amp Modeler (.nam) captures, and it doesn't come with any. There are two ways to get some:

  • From TONE3000: tap Sign in to TONE3000, sign in with a free account, then tap the Amp Model slot to browse and download.
  • From your own files: tap the Amp Model slot, then Import .nam…, and choose a file from the Files app. Cabinet impulse responses (WAV) are imported the same way from the Cabinet slot.

Why does it say the built-in mic would feed back?

With nothing plugged in, the iPad's microphone and speaker are right next to each other, and sending one into the other would howl. Shamalamanam won't do that. Plug in headphones or an audio interface and you can switch Monitor on.

I hear nothing

  • Check that the Power switch is on and the red lamp is lit.
  • Check that Monitor is on.
  • Play and watch the Input meter. If it doesn't move, the iPad isn't getting your guitar: check the cable, and the input gain on your interface.
  • If Input moves but Output doesn't, turn up the Output knob and check that an amp model is loaded.

Can I play along with a song?

Yes. Shamalamanam plays alongside other apps, so start your backing track, lesson or drum app and play over it.
